Chimi Lhakhang – The fertility temple

Locally called the fertility temple Chimi Lhakhang is a Buddhist temple in Sopsokha Village, Punakha District. The only way to reach the temple is to take a short hike along the village path and paddy fields. Constructed in 1499, it is a significant Bhutanese pilgrimage site.

Not only locals but foreigners also visit this temple due to a belief hardly found anywhere. The temple stands for fertility belief and has representation in the phallus symbols and paintings. Childless couples visit the temple to have the blessings of having a baby. However, the temple is associated with everyone’s wealth, luck, and security. Chimi Lhakhang is an exceptional part of Buddhist ethnicities in Bhutan, somehow uncommon yet very imposing and fascinating.

Beautiful Dzongs

When you are in West Bhutan, do not miss to be at Tashichho Dzong, Punakha Dzong, and Rinpung Dzong. While in middle and East Bhutan, you must be at Trongsa Dzong and Trashigang Dzong.

Dzongs are integral to Bhutanese culture, combining various functions like religion, military, administration, and society. Young students have taught thirteen conventional arts of Bhutan, which include painting, sculpturing, wood carving, embroidery, and weaving.
